Sveriges Television put major focus on Rally Sweden
Sveriges Television (SVT) put major focus on Rally Sweden, February 5-8.
Through daily live broadcasts and studio shows the viewers will be able to follow the new Junior World Champion, Pontus Tidemand, as he takes on the elite drivers in his M-Sport WRC Ford.
- We will offer the viewers an exciting buffet of rally goodies. To have Pontus Tidemand in a major team will of course make it all the more interesting, says Johan Ejeborg, project manager at SVT.
Rally Sweden is the second round of the WRC with start and finish in Karlstad and with Hagfors as the central hub with the Service Park located at the airport as previous years. The first leg will run in two (!) countries, since several stages are run in Norway.
SVT will have their studio in Hagfors with Maria Wallberg as host. Commentators will be Stefan Klemetz and Jonas Kruse. The live studio show “After Rally” will sum up the day with footage, analysis and interviews.
The coverage starts on Wednesday Feb 5 with a one hour live show from Karlstad SSS. It closes on Saturday Feb 8 with two live stages from the Hagfors area.
The reigning world champion, Sebastien Ogier is the top candidate to winning the rally. The Volswagen team dominated the WRC last year and it is here we find perhaps the foremost challenger to Ogier, his teammate Jari-Matti Latvala. The Finn won Rally Sweden in 2008 and 2012 and finished third overall in WRC last year.
Another candidate is without a doubt Mikko Hirvonen, who won in 2010 and 2011 and who has now left Citroën for M-Sport where he hopes for a rekindling. In this team Pontus Tidemand will get the chance to show what he really can do.
- The expectations on Pontus are high, as they should be. He showed impressing speed in his debut last year and should definitely be able to finish in the top five, says SVT expert Jonas Kruse.
Citrën has had a tough time since Loeb left. But in Norwegian top driver Mads Östberg the French team might have found a driver who can challenge for the WRC title. Östbergs drives with Swedish Jonas Andersson as his co-driver.
Hyundai is back in the WRC. This time with a major commitment where Belgian Thierry Neuville will try to give the South-Koreans the start they want. Neuville finished second last year for M-Sport.
